Dick shared his last serious romantic relationship. Laid in is a documentation book mark stating that this book is from the Simpson library with photographs of Philip and Joan and with the text of a letter, dated April 27, 1977, which Philip wrote to his friend, noted book dealer Ray Torrence, lovingly and eloquently expressing his deep feelings for Joan. On the ending of their relationship in late 1977, this from ÔDivine Invasions. A Life of Philip K. DickÕ by Lawrence Sutin, pg. 252: Ò.Phil now balked at a permanent move back to Northern California, and Joan would not consider Orange County residence. The relationship ended. For years to come, Phil would miss Joan - the last woman with whom he lived in a serious relationship.Ó Very good plus copy with some signs of use, a bit of edge wear and a trace of dust soiling in printed wrappers.

Contents include stories: Newshound, Space Gamble, Export Commodity, The Chromium Fence, The lonely . The story by P.K. Dick The Chromium Fence is set in a future where political differences have been reduced to trivialities, the "purists" are pitted against the "naturalists". The purists wish to make the adoption of cosmetic changes (sweat glands removed, teeth fixed and so on) compulsory. The purist and naturalist mantra in this story is shown as one extreme manifestation of the brain-washing. The central character, Don Walsh, seems the only sane man left and refuses to join either side. Eventually, however, he is forced to act and pays the ultimate price. This story was never reprinted anywhere after its single appearance in the magazine Imagination, until the appearance of Dick's collected stories in 1987.
