Helaas is van de meeste steden de financiële administratie zeer onvolledig overgeleverd. In veel steden verschijnen pas in de vijfti…ende eeuw de eerste rekeningen, van slechts een klein aantal steden hebben we rekeningen uit de veertiende eeuw. Door een gelukkig toeval - een ijzeren kist als bewaarplaats - zijn in Dordrecht rekeningen en delen van rekeningen uit de periode 1283-1287 overgeleverd: 72 vellen perkament, deels aan elkaar genaaid en grotendeels in opgerolde toestand bewaard. We hebben hier te maken met de oudste overgeleverde stadsrekeningen in de noordelijke Nederlanden. Voor historisch taalkundigen zijn deze stukken interessant, omdat ze een vroeg en omvangrijk corpus vormen van ambtelijk Nederlands. Daarom zijn deze rekeningen door Geysseling (verspreid) opgenomen in het eerste deel van zijn Corpus van middelnederlandse teksten. Historici vinden in deze rekeningen een schat aan economische, sociale en institutionele gegevens omtrent Dordrecht, Hollands grootste stad, die zich juist in deze periode snel ontwikkelde tot een vooraanstaand handelscentrum. Omdat de editie die Dozy in 1891 bezorgde, sterk verouderd is en de editie van Geysseling o.a. wegens het ontbreken van indices voor historici minder bruikbaar is, hebben Burgers en Dijkhof een nieuwe editie gemaakt met indices van namen en zaken. Nadere bestudering van de uitwendige kenmerken van de vellen in combinatie met de inhoud heeft geleid tot correcties op Geysselings ordening en datering ervan. In de inleiding bij de editie wordt uitvoerig ingegaan op het ontstaan en de structuur van de rekeningen en wordt een beschrijving gegeven van de institutionele, bestuurlijke en sociaal-economische ontwikkeling van Dordrecht in de tweede helft van de dertiende eeuw.
