The present volume contributesto this recent trend by focusing on the contrast between the 'outside'sources on the peoples of the frontier - the Roman view - and the'inside' sources, that is, the precious material produced by the Arabsthemselves, and by approaching these sources within an anthropologicalframework of how peripheral peoples face larger powers. For the firsttime, the situation on the Arabian frontier is also compared with thaton the southern Egyptian frontier, where similar sources have been foundof peoples such as the Blemmyes and Noubades. Thus, the volume offers arichly-documented examination of the frontier interactions in these twovibrant and critically-important areas of the Late Antique East.The book is of interest to anthropologists, archaeologists, historians,Egyptologists, Arabists, epigraphists and papyrologists and, in general,to all scholars working in the period of Late Antiquity. Om deze vragen te kunnen beantwoorden, probeert deze studie het beeld dat Procopiu…s oproept op twee belangrijke punten te nuanceren. Ten eerste zijn de opmerkingen van Procopius getoetst aan andersoortige bronnen zoals documenten en archeologische gegevens. Ten tweede is die Oudegyptische culturen op Philae geplaatst tegen de achtergrond van een serie regionale ontwikkelingen, waarin het christendom langzamerhand de overhand kreeg. Een regionale studie kan een complexer en dynamischer beeld geven van het proces van religieuze overgang. Daarom gaat deze studie niet alleen in op het proces te Philae, maar ook in twee andere nederzettingen in de regio, Syene (het moderne Aswan) en Elefantine. (?) Hoe uniek de positie van de Oudegyptische cultus in de late Oudheid ook mag zijn geweest, zij moet tegelijkertijd worden gezien tegen de achtergrond van een ontwikkeling in de hele regio waarin de samenleving geleidelijk christelijk werd.
