The notion of art distorting appearance led Bullock to the French impressionist and postimpressionist painters, whose work exerted a lasting influence on him. With regards to photography, Edward Kaminsky, a professor at the Art Center School in Los Angeles, encouraged Bullock to imitate and alter reality through technical manipulation of the photographic medium.
