Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good-. Illustrated by the authors (illustratore). Early printing (see Notes). (pictorial yellow cloth; no dust jacket) [modest shelfwear, front hinge starting, some external soiling, slight fraying at base of spine, remnants of removed label or bookplate on front pastedown (fortunately the endpaper illustrations in the back of the book are identical, and unscarred); printed name in ink on the half-title page, and an interesting gift inscription on the dedication page (see Notes)]. (B&W illustrations; see NOTES re hand-coloring) Charming children's tale about "Little Man," an elderly invalid who is visited one day by the Coachman-To-The-World-Beyond (the Angel of Death by another name); but the latter takes offense at some small slight, and leaves the guy behind. "So the man lived on and on, but, since he was too old to grow any older, and too big to grow any bigger, and since it is very tiresome to remain always the same, he began to 'ungrow' (which is a way of saying grow little) and grow young, until he was as little and as young as any star in the sky." He proceeds to have beaucoup adventures in the Meadow and the Woods, where he meets numerous wild creatures, all of whom are depicted (with their whimsical names) in small portraits on the book's endpapers. This book has a couple of unique characteristics. First, a number of the illustrations appear to have been hand-colored (with watercolors), amateurishly but carefully; normally I'd consider this a serious flaw, but it was done well enough that it actually enhances the illustrations. More interesting is the provenance of the book: the gift inscription on the dedication page reads "To - / Mickey - My Baby. / Heaps-of-Love. / Mother. / Dec. 25 - 1925." "Mickey" was the girl (then eight years old) who grew up to be the wife of film producer Walter Seltzer (from whom this book was acquired); "Mother," therefore, was silent-film actress Jane Novak, who was Seltzer's mother-in-law. This also explains the additional name that's written (in the same hand as the "Mother" inscription) on the half-title page: Virginia Newburg, which was Mickey's birth name. (Her father was actor Frank Newburg, to whom Jane Novak was married from 1915 until 1918.) That's probably enough notes already, but I should at least mention that the authors of this book were brother and sister; Anne was a well-regarded novelist, and Dillwyn, who was primarily an illustrator, is probably best-known as the lover and late-in-his-life husband of culinary writer M.F.K. Fisher. Also, the Parrish siblings were cousins to the renowned illustrator Maxfield Parrish. AND by the way (you thought I was done?), re the printing: 1924 on the title page, "Published August, 1923" on the copyright page, therefore this one being a slightly "later printing" of the first edition.
