Le's "From Vietnam to Hollywood". The Vietnamese-American's ground-breaking, innovative, and deeply moving appropriation and transformation of traditional basket and textile weaving techniques as massive tapestry art. "Haunting and provocative, Dinh Q. Le's billboard-scale works interweave stills from Vietnamese films with war pictures, news photographs, and archival documentary images. His interweaving is literal: The artist slices giant appropriated pictures into strips and then intermingles them as if they were the wicker used to make a basket or the rags used to make a tapestry, a reworking of traditional weaving techniques taught to him by his grandmother. The resulting photo-collages have a pixilated quality as well as a handmade physicality offered as a large-scale juxtaposition of images. Le's tapestries and video installations reveal a decades-long, introspective journey in which the artist has brought his vision to bear on the dislocation and cultural displacement he experienced, first in fleeing his homeland, then with his immersion in American culture, and ultimately with his return to his estranged and yet familiar country. Through his art, Le has sought to negotiate the differing perspectives he holds: Vietnamese, Vietnamese-American, American-in-Vietnam, and his place in two societies in which he finds both belonging and alienation" (Publisher's blurb). Like the work of Thomas Kellner, his books, including this splendid Catalog, give only an idea of how the meticulously hand-crafted, complex artworks appear - and overwhelm - in person. But to give just such an idea makes the undertaking all the more admirable and noble. Dinh Q. Le died of a stroke in Hanoi on April 6, 2024 at the age of 56. An absolute "must-have" title for Dinh Q. In seinem Notizbuch besch…reibt er im Interview mit Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev die historischen und autobiographischen Zusammenhänge seiner intensiven Sammelleidenschaft. Gemeinsam mit seiner Familie flüchtete er 1978, im Alter von 10 Jahren, vor der kommunistischen Regierung und der Roten Khmer aus seiner Heimatstadt Hà Tiên. Nach fast 20 Jahren in den USA kehrte Dinh Q. Lê 1997 dauerhaft nach Vietnam zurück. Die Zeichnungen, die er in seine Sammlung aufgenommen hat, haben einen melancholischen Charakter. Sie zeigen Menschen in einer idealisierten Landschaft, als ob sie im Krieg nach Alltäglichkeit und Naturverbundenheit suchten. Diese sehr persönlichen Skizzen und ihre Politik der Form setzen den 'offiziellen' Bildern eine andere Realität entgegen, sie offenbaren eine Situation kollektiven Wartens, eine Sehnsucht, die die Menschen vereinte. Dinh Q. Lê ( 1968) ist Künstler und lebt und arbeitet in Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt, Vietnam. Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev ( 1957) ist künstlerische Leiterin der dOCUMENTA (13).
