When he went to Algeria in the 1950s Dirk Alvermann was only eighteen, a rebellious Western German teenager thrilled by the struggle for freedom by the Algerian people against French colonial rule. Together with a unit of the Algerian liberation army, Alvermann found a way into the Eastern Algerian war zone, determined to keep a photographic record of the events unfolding there. After returning to West Germany he set about planning the publication of his work in the most accessible form available. The book should go from hand to hand like a political manifesto. In 1950 Germany publishing house Rowoht had introduced its paperback series, known by the name of rororo â" an ideal format for Alvermannâs book. Rowoht initially agreed to publish the book but later cancelled it when any partisanship with the Algerian resistance seemed inappropriate. The East Berlin publishing house Rutten & Loening eventually published the book in 1960 as a hardcover, contrary to Alvermannâs vision for the project. Steidlâs new edition gives voice to the artistâs original intentions, adopting the rororo format and softcover finish. The photographs are accompanied by historical documents, and quotes taken from French military sources, pamphlets, newspapers and magazines. More than fifty years after its first publication, the book is as relevant as ever as it tells the story of a people rising up against oppression and despotism: against European colonialism, or, like today, against homemade dictatorial regimes. Dirk Alvermann was born in Dusseldorf in 1937. Early in his career he became an influential political photographer publishing numerous books including Algerien L'Algérie (1960) and Keine Experimente Bilder zum Grundgesetz (1961). Throughout the 1960s he worked as a photographer for magazines including Neue Berliner Illustrierte, Quick, Das Magazin and the photographic agency Magnum. In 1966 Alvermann emigrated to East Berlin where he continued to live and work. Since the publication of his seminal book Ich Liebe Dich in 1979 he has focused on his work as a film maker and author. Die erste seiner fotografischen Kurzgeschichten fuhrt nach Warschau. Im Oktober 1956 hatte sich Alvermann dorthin begeben, um von einer ruhelosen Stadt zu erzahlen, wo auch im Schlagschatten sowjetischer Panzer noch das sanfte Rauschen der Weichsel zu horen war. Fur die zweite Erzahlung schummelt er seine Kamera 1962 nach Tirana ins abgeschottete stalinistische Albanien. In seiner Neapel-Geschichte trifft Alvermann einen Mafia-Boss und entwischt den Carabinieri nur knapp, als er die nachtliche Raumung eines Hafenviertels fotografisch dokumentieren will. Wie ein Marchen aus uralten Zeiten erzahlen seine Bilder der spanischen Halbinsel Peniscola von kleinen Bergdorfern und Fischerhafen ohne Hotelhochburgen und Beton. Und auch seine Shortstory vom Sheffield der 1960er Jahre erinnert an eine ruhmvolle Vergangenheit, als in der Stahlschmiede der Arbeiterstolz noch nicht vom Dienstleistungsgedanken vertrieben worden war. So unterschiedlich erzahlt sich Geschichte, so unmittelbar erklaren sich die politischen Wurzeln Europas im Bild.
