The significance of his sojourn in this village in Brabant, shortly after the moment he decided to become an artist, goes beyond that. The choices he makes here, at the beginning of his career, determined to a large degree the further course of his artistic calling. The first essay deals, more or less chronologically, with Vincent's sojourn in Etten, with the study methods he used, with his subject matter and his models. It makes clear by what and by whom he let himself be inspired. The second essay is a further exploration of this, and is concerned with the significance of the Etten period for Van Gogh's later work. Numerous examples show that the themes and his drawing style from this period return again and again in the works he made afterwards. The two main essays are followed by an annotated catalogue of all known works of the Etten period, in accordance with the most recent scholarly insights.

Het Vincent van GoghHuis is een nieuw kunstcentrum op de geboortegrond van de wereldberoemde schilder. In een presentatie over Van Gogh en Zundert w…ordt hem blijvend hommage gebracht. Zijn invloed op de 'kunst van de toekomst' is het thema van wisselende tentoonstellingen en publicaties over kunstenaars die door hem zijn geïnspireerd. Als eerste staat de Russische beeldhouwer Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967) centraal. Aan hem wijdt het Vincent van GoghHuis van 30 augustus 2008 tot en met 4 januari 2009 de openingsexpositie. Nadat hij in de jaren twintig de plaatsen in Noord-Brabant bezocht waar Van Gogh heeft gewerkt, raakte Zadkine levenslang gefascineerd door het leven van de kunstschilder uit Zundert. In 1955 vroeg de gemeente Auvers-sur-Oise, waar Van Gogh overleden was, aan Zadkine een monument voor de kunstenaar te ontwerpen. De beeldhouwer verdiepte zich in Vincents brieven en maakte verschillende studies, waaruit autonome beelden ontstonden en monumenten voor Wasmes (Borinage), Auvers-sur-Oise, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence en Zundert. Tussen 1955 en 1964 vervaardigde Zadkine een portretbuste, Van Gogh als tekenaar, als schilder, als prediker, wandelend door het veld en tenslotte de gebroeders Van Gogh. In deze tweetalige publicatie (Ned/Frans) staan ze alle afgebeeld en beschreven. Verder zijn er zeldzame atelierfoto's opgenomen van Zadkine, terwijl hij werkt aan zijn Van Goghbeelden, een getekend portret van Van Gogh, en ook andere bekende beelden, waaronder het monument De verwoeste stad in Rotterdam. Zadkine & Van Gogh is de eerste in een reeks van publicaties i.s.m. het Vincent van GoghHuis over kunstenaars die door Van Gogh werden geïnspireerd. Volgende uitgaven in deze serie verschijnen bij tentoonstellingen over de Belgische kunstschilders Roger Raveel en Anna Boch in 2009. Dans les années vingt le sculpteur russe Ossip Zadkine (1890-1967) se rendit dans le Brabant Septentrional, voyageant sur les traces de Vincent van Gogh et il se trouva fasciné à vie par ce peintre originaire de Zundert. Lorsqu' en 1955 la commune d'Auvers-sur-Oise, où mourut Vincent, lui demanda de créer un monument pour Van Gogh, il accepta immédiatement. Zadkine se plongea dans les lettres de Vincent et réalisa plusieurs études d'où naquirent des sculptures indépendantes et des monuments pour les villes de Wasmes (Borinage), Auvers-sur-Oise, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence et Zundert. Entre 1955 et 1964 Zadkine réalisa différents bustes de Van Gogh, des sculptures de Van Gogh comme dessinateur, comme peintre, comme prédicateur, ou marchant à travers champs et enfin quelques statues et un monument des frères Van Gogh. Cette publication bilingue (néerlandais / français) renferme des photos et des descriptions de toutes ces oeuvres. Elle contient en outre des photos rares de Zadkine dans son atelier, travaillant à ses statues de Van Gogh, un portrait au crayon de Vincent van Gogh et d'autres oeuvres célèbres illustrant sa relation particulière avec les Pays-Bas, dont sa Ville Détruite à Rotterdam, récemment déclarée monument d'Etat. Zadkine & Van Gogh est la première d'une série de publications de la Vincent van GoghHuis, en collaboration avec Scriptum Art, sur les artistes inspirés par Vincent van Gogh.

Het Noord-Brabantse dorp Dongen was in de negentiende eeuw een geliefd schildersoord. Kunstenaars kwamen van heinde en verre om hier studies te maken van wevers, schoenmakers, spinsters en kantwerksters. D…e Duitser Max Liebermann schilderde in Dongen een Schoenmakerswerkplaats, die op de Parijse salon werd geprezen vanwege de impressionistische schilderwijze. Jozef Israels vond er het motief voor zijn Arbeidersgezin aan tafel. Dit schilderij inspireerde Vincent van Gogh toen hij zijn beroemde versie schilderde van De Aardappeleters. Dongen was al vroeg in trek. In de romantische periode zochten kunstenaars er de woeste ongerepte natuur, pittoreske boerderijen en het bijzondere duinlandschap, te midden van bossen en Brabantse hei. De omgeving lokte ook talrijke veeschilders. Toen de schilders meer interesse kregen voor binnenhuizen en taferelen uit het volk, vonden ze onder de bewoners van Dongen de meest excentrieke types. August Allebe ontdekte hier zijn `toverkol'. De oude boerin met haar karakteristieke witte muts stond tevens model voor In de duinen te Dongen van Petrus van der Velden. Zijn leerlinge Suze Bisschop-Robertson portretteerde haar later nogmaals als De Kaartlegster. De jonge Tachtiger Jan Veth werkte in Dongen aan zijn eerste etsen van kantwerksters en hij schreef hier voor De Nieuwe Gids een sonnet over een wever. Tot de laatste kunstenaars die het dorp bezochten, behoorden de vrienden Albert Neuhuys, Jakob Smits en Wijnand van Horssen. Zij zagen dat de modernisering reeds voor het einde van de negentiende eeuw de schilderachtigheid van Dongen volledig uitroeide. Schilders van Dongen beschrijft de kroniek van het `vergeten' schildersdorp. Uitgebreid kunsthistorisch onderzoek heeft talrijke nieuwe gegevens aan het licht gebracht. In deze publicatie zijn diverse documenten, kunstenaarsbrieven, foto's, tekeningen en schilderijen opgenomen uit verborgen archieven en particuliere collecties. De ontstaansgeschiedenis van veel onbekende en beroemde kunstwerken wordt onthuld. Werk van uiteenlopende kunstenaars is zowel onderling als met de plek van ontstaan in verband gebracht.
