Monnier que le prétendu portrait de M. de Fongeray ne serait rien de moins que celui de Stendhal, légèrement chargé » ; Champfleury (Henry Monnier, sa vie, son oeuvre, p. 360) : « N'y a-t-il pas là confusion ? En 1827, Beyle (Stendhal) n'offrait pas l'aspect du bourgeois ventru prêté par l'artiste au prétendu éditeur des Soirées de Neuilly ». Notre exemplaire, mentionné comme étant une troisième édition, reprend en frontispice le portrait-charge de Stendhal (annoncé comme étant celui de M. de Fongeray). Quelques épidermures aux coiffes, dorures un peu passées et quelques rousseurs éparses, mais exemplaire en reliure d'époque agréablement patinée.
