In the late 1970s, Ditton moved to the University of Sheffield as a Lecturer in the Department of Sociological Studies. He later became the Director of the Scottish Centre for Criminology in Edinburgh, a position he held until his retirement in 2005.Ditton's research focused on various aspects of criminology, including the fear of crime and the sociology of deviance. He authored several influential works, such as Controlology: Beyond the New Criminology (1979) , which critiqued traditional criminological theories, and co-edited The Fear of Crime (2000) , a comprehensive examination of public perceptions of crime.
