Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. THE BRITISH NAVY AT WAR BY W. MACNEILE DIXON 1917 SOFT COVER MANY PHOTOS FOLD-OUT MAP. I was surprised to find a book of this nature The British Navy at War, by W. MacNeile Dixon, available in 1917, in soft cover. Even more surprising was the fact that the soft cover version seems to have carried its value better than the hard cover, except where one finds a truly pristine copy of the hard cover with the dust jacket. I suspect that this small soft cover book about the ongoing exploits of the British Navy in World War I, was actually published in soft cover format in the U.S. and circulated more widely than the hard cover version, to help promote support for the War effort or even the decision of the American Government to go to War. Those of you who know and collect the works of this time frame will know better. This small soft cover book (5 x 7 ¼ inches, 87 pages and one Appendix) was published by Houghton Mifflin of Boston and New York, dated 1917, about the same time that President Wilson and the American public were struggling with whether to join forces with the British and their allies against Germany. The book is very well illustrated, with portraits of British Naval commanders, of the ships at sea, battle maps and a fold-out map of part of the conflict. Condition: This small soft cover book is in very good condition, surprising in fact that it has held together over the years (again, one of those books which came out of an estate where the previous owners had taken good care of their books). The soft covers show some darkening, particularly along the spine where it is handled and some rubbing and bumping. There are small splits to the outer covers at the spine tips and some light dog-earing to the corners. Inside, the book is unmarked but there is some minor foxing typically associated with the plates (these glossy plates often seem to attract foxing?). Overall, the interior pages and plates are clean and bright without age-toning. The fold-out map is not torn. The binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…
