The last of three novels published by this Texas-born author during her lifetime. (Another, "Swamp Angel," was published posthumously.) The title character in this whimsical satire "is a gentle person -- not an intellectual, not unconventional, but lonely all the same." He's a suburban dweller "with his wife, Amelia, his mother-in-law, and an extremely unattractive poodle." From this "particular combination of realities with which it would be callous to ask any man to come to grips," he seeks escape in his secret hobbies: "a collection of buttons, crossword puzzles, and the making of words out of words (Parakeet: pear, pare, reap, rape, take, rake, part, tear, park, prate, rate, peer, rapt)." A 2nd print (stated on the front flap of the DJ) of one of Gardner's early accounts of his travels in Mexico - in this case Baja California. Illustrated with numerous B&W photographs. Beige cloth boards with gold lettering and decoration. The corners of the front flap of the DJ are clipped however the $5.00 price is present. The front panel of the DJ presents well however there is loss all along the top edge of the rear panel that ranges from 2.375" to 1" at the top of the spine. There is also a 2" x .25" piece missing from the center of the left spine hinge and loss at the tips of the flap folds. The internals are clean and tight with minimal wear.
