Wenn es einen Markstein für den Beginn der modernen Chemie gibt, dann war es sein Verständnis für die wahre Natur der Prozesse wie Verbrennung, Rosten und Atmung sowie der Rolle des Sauerstoff. Doch wie steht es mit Scheele Wie mit Priestley Waren nicht sie es, die den Sauerstoff als erste entdeckten In der Tat erfuhr Antoine Lavoisier an einem Oktoberabend des Jahres 1774, dass der englisch-unitarische Geistliche Joseph Priestley ein neues Gas erzeugt hatte. Noch in der gleichen Woche erreichte ihn ein Brief des schwedischen Apothekers Carl Wilhelm Scheele, der dem französischen Wissenschaftler darlegte, wie man den Lebensspender Sauerstoff, das Schlüsselelement in Lavoisiers neuer Theorie, erzeugen könnte. Scheele führte die entsprechenden Forschungsarbeiten bereits einige Jahre davor durch, doch blieben sie bis 1777 unveröffentlicht.Nun gründen Scheele und Priestley ihre Entdeckung auf eine völlig falsche Theorie - die Phlogiston-Theorie, von Lavoisier bald widerlegt.
