It also describes airplanes developed by design bureaus that only briefly existed. Many of the latter designs were cancelled at the outbreak of WW II as the Soviets concentrated on airplane designs that were proven or could be modified and improved fairly easily. Most designs are accompanied by text discussing "Operations." This wording is sometimes interesting: the author (Gordon) usually merely quotes the Soviet WW II propaganda descriptions, without adding any comments. Apparently the "Great Patriotic War" and it's heroic exploits are still sacred subjects in the new Russian Federation. Other "Operations" descriptions seem to be objective. One observation: some bombing operations that would have been regarded as minor by the USAAF or the RAF, and would probably not even rate discussion in western air combat books, receive great attention in this book. Maybe that is because the Soviet long-range bomber command (VVS) just didn't have the hundreds of bombers the US and Britain did and so never mounted air operations equivalent to Regensburg, Berlin, Nuremberg, or Hamburg.
