Portal would take nearly a decade to complete, and would provide the site for fundamental developments in Suhs thinking on the role of both artist and museum in the 21st century, as well as the relationship between East and West.This volume tells the epic story of that process through those who made it possible. Through color illustrations and texts, it provides unique access to the typically veiled fabrication process: the process of scanning, modelling and constructing a nine-ton sculpture that would appear as if it was not there, a living ghost image cast from negative space. A sculptor and installation artist, Korean-born Do Ho Suh (born 1962) is best known for his full-scale fabric works in which he meticulously re…imagines the architectural space of his past homes and studios. Since collaborating with Singapores STPI Creative Workshop & Gallery in 2009, Suh has turned to print and paper as a new medium to channel and recreate these forms. The resulting Thread Drawings, developed using an innovative technique that employs thread as a sculptural material on handmade paper, represent an important breakthrough in Suhs repertoire. The artists Gelatine Drawings extend from this technical approach to capture a range of dimensional domestic structures, objects and in-between spaces flattened on a single plane, rendered spectral, foldable and mobile. This book also documents Suhs pastel rubbings of interior spaces and everyday objects that disclose and memorialize details of his surroundings, as well as etchings, lithographic prints and cyanotypes. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
