The story unfolds during April 1942, when gas rationing is imposed in wartime. The author, an army surgeon, starts commuting to work by bicycle. Clifford Graves recounts humorous early experiencesbeing outpaced by a colonel with a horse who promptly sells it. Key adventures include riding his bicycle into London during an air raid, smuggling it across the English Channel on D-Day, evading German tanks in the Battle of the Bulge, and cycling through the ruins of Berlin. He reflects on the solace the bicycle gives him in the Black Forest, encounters a salty boatswain, and eventually returns to the U.S. to lead cycling-related youth organizations, including the International Bicycle Touring Society. The tone is a mix of reflection, light humor, and vivid wartime and peacetime travel stories. (BR) Shelf 103.
