Softcover. Condizione: Near fine. First edition. The simultaneous paperback edition. Inscribed briefly on the title page and signed by four former US Forest Service Chiefs: R. Max. Peterson, F. Dale Roberston, Jack Ward Thomas, and Mike Dombeck. Uncommon as such. This book collects excerpts from interviews with seven FS Chiefs, who "look back at the issues they faced throughout their 50 collective years of service and provide a glimpse into the inner workings of America's oldest and largest federal land-management agency." A near fine paperback with some sunning to spine.

Softcover. Condizione: Fine. First edition. Association copy: Former United States Forest Service Chief Jack Ward Thomas's contributor's copy, with his ownership signature, date, and place ("Florence, MT") on the first blank. A nice association between two FS Chiefs, as Dombeck served as chief immediately after Thomas. Thomas contributes a short "focus essay" entitled "Public Lands: An American Birthright" on pages 21-23. He is also mentioned on at least six other pages in the book, including on page one, where he is the subject of the opening anecdote related to "doe wars" in Texas and public attention to natural resource issues. He is thanked in the acknowledgments. As for the authors: Christopher A. Wood is a VP for conservation programs for Trout Unlimited.Michael P. Dombeck was the 14th Chief of the Forest Service and previous to that director of the Bureau of Land Management. He is the only person to have led the nation's two largest public land management agencies. Dombeck hasbeen awarded the Ansel Adams Award, the Aldo Leopold Restoration Award (one can hear a clear echo of Leopold in his use of "land ethic" in the inscription), and Conservation Hero of the Year by the Wilderness Society, among many others (also speaking of Leopold, he is a member of the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame). A book about the history, practice, and ethics of public land management in the US, co-written by the authors in a unified style. Interspersed are also wide-ranging short "focus essays" from influential environmentalists and public lands thinkers, including Jack Ward Thomas (former Forest Service Chief), Patricia Nelson Limerick (renown environmental historian), Tim Palmer, Rick Bass, Bruce Babbitt (former Secretary of the Interior), and Curt Meine and Nina Leopold Bradley (Aldo Leopold's daughter) among others. With a foreword by Charles Wilkinson, who writes at one turn: "The soul of this volume . is found in the many echoes of Aldo Leopold's voice. The reader feels Leopold's presence in the text, the chapter titles, even the artwork." A fine paperback with "Thomas" written boldly on each face of the text block (as was JW Thomas's custom) .

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. First thus. A significant association copy, signed by five Chiefs of the U.S. Forest Service and inscribed at length on the title page by one of them to his Deputy Chief: "To Jim Furnish, you have been perhaps the best Deputy Chief in the history of the Forest Service, because of your land ethic and loyalty. Much of what was accomplished would not have been possible had you not been in your job running the National Forest System. Mike Dombeck, Chief, Forest Service, March 2001." Terrific sentiment. Additionally, this book is signed again by Dombeck and by the previous four Chiefs of the Forest Service on the following dedication page representing 30 years of leadership: Jack Ward Thomas ('93-'96), F. Dale Robertson ('87-'93), R. Max Peterson ('79-'87), and John R. McGuire ('72-'79). Those inscriptions are dated 1997, suggesting the book was signed by the Chiefs and then saved by Dombeck or the FS for such an occasion. This edition or book in general is unheard of signed by persons of significance and here is a trove of Forest Service association. Jim Furnish served as Deputy Chief of the Forest Service from 1999-2002, during which time hehelped create (with Dombeck) 60 million acres of new roadless areas via the "roadless rule."Before that he was a Forest Supervisor in Oregon and central to a push away from simple timber production to restoration during the spotted owl "wars." Mike Dombeck was the 14th Chief of the Forest Service and previous to that director of the Bureau of Land Management. Breaking New Groundis the autobiography of Gifford Pinchot, founder and first chief of the Forest Service, first published in 1947 (just posthumous, as he died in '46), and here part of a series of "Conservation Classics" that Island Press reissued. That the Forest Service Chiefs would gather their signatures in this book and one of them then inscribe it to his Deputy suggests the extent to which Pinchot is revered and his influence abides still in the FS. It should also be noted that Pinchot's signature is obviously not possible in this title, so Dombeck and his fellow Chiefs, as successors, stand in. A fine book in fine jacket, as new.Included also is a signed copy of Jim Furnish's memoir Toward a Natural Forest: The Forest Service in Transition (Oregon State University Press 2015), a paperback original, uncommon signed, near fine. .
