Professor Stallings specializes in the study of problematic situations, especially in attempting to understand differences in levels of collective concern across a variety of calamities, catastrophes, crises, disasters, and tragedies. His current int…erests are in theoretical, methodological, and ethical issues related to the study of crises and disasters. Professor Stallings has been president of the Research Committee on Disasters (RC 39) of the International Sociological Association. From 1996-2002 he served as editor of the International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters. He has been a visiting scholar at Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, Germany, (1996) and at the University of California, Berkeley (1989). He has served on various review panels at the National Science Foundation, two committees at the National Research Council-National Academy of Sciences, and on the Emergency Preparedness and Response Task Force of the President's Commission on the Accident at Three Mile Island. Wolf R. Dombrowsky has been engaged since 1979 in disaster research at the Institute of Sociology, Christian-Albrechts-University. In 1987 he became Deputy Head and in 2002 Head of the Institute's sociological Disaster Research Centre (Katastrophenforschungsstelle, KFS). He is a member of the Protection Commission of the German Ministry of the Interior and a member of the Environment Ministry's Radiation Protection Commission. Created in 1983 by the International Sociological Association's Research Committee on the Sociology of Disasters (ISA RC39), the International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters has the distinction of being one of the oldest and most respected disaster science journals of the world, focused on the social and behavioral aspects of relatively sudden collective stress events be they natural, technological or human induced, typically referred to as disasters or mass emergencies. Since its transition to SAGE Publishing in 2023 it is being relaunched with revisions to the âAims and Scope' and an expansion of the Editorial Board members, reflecting the changing definitions of hazards and disasters during these current times and the growing interdisciplinarity of this field. This issue contains articles on Sustainable Development, Safety in the Air, Security in the Air, Gender Division of Labor, Disaster Assessment, Impact Assessment, Hurricane Mitch, Disaster Coordination, Vulnerability Reduction, Political Responsiveness, Disaster Policy, Emergency Planning, and Executive Decisions.
