From the Preface In this book, the author has endeavoured to present in narrative form an outline of the development of silversmithing and related crafts in each of the four Atlantic Provinces, accompanied by directories of makers and their marks when these are known. Inevitably, there is frequently some doubt when the initials of more than one maker coincide, particularly when the time and place may be the same. Comparison of the accompanying Pseudo-marks will often be an aid in identification. Many jewellers and watchmakers have been included whose work hasn't yet been identified in the hope that some collector or student may be enabled to propose a tentative ascription to unknown pieces which come to their attention. The illustrations of silverwork and jewellery have been chosen to represent a selection of the finest pieces known from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. I can only hope that sufficient interest will be stimulated to encourage further research in Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island as well. As many mantle clocks and tall grandfather clocks have been illustrated in several publications on Maritime furniture, only a few distinctive examples of the watch and clock makers' crafts have been included.
