Hardback. Condizione: New. This diary offers an important new perspective on the critical events leading to the end of the Chinese civil war. From September 1945 to April 1946, Chang Kia-ngau kept a daily log in the negotiations between Nationalist China and Soviet Union to recover Manchuria from Soviet military occupation. The diary reveals that the Russians actively sought Nationalist China's cooperation in rehabilitating and operating the huge industrial complex that the Japanese had built in Manchuria during the 1930s and 1940s. The Russians were willing to let Chiang Kai-shek's government take control over Manchuria if the Nationalists would pledge that only Russia would be able to exert foreign influence in Manchuria. Chang Kia-ngau's diary is an eyewitness account of how Manchuria, one of the world's greatest industrial sites, fell to the control of the Chinese Red Army and thus led to the communist victory over Chiang Kai-shek. This book will interest students of cold war rivalry, U.S. foreign policy, Soviet diplomacy, and Chinese history alike.

Bibliography. Index. Partially blacked over label on fep. Substantial ink underlining noted. Donald G. Gillin is Professor of History and Director of Asian Studies at Vassar College. A specialist in the political and military history of modern China, he wrote Warlord: Yen Hsi-shan in Shansi Province, 1911-1949 and Falsifying China's History: The Case of Sterling Seagrave's The Soong Dynasty. Dr. Gillin taught at Vassar from 1968 until his retirement in 1992. He was previously a faculty member at Duke University. A fluent Mandarin Chinese speaker, he was noted for talents as a lecturer and storyteller. His innovative "Hollywood on Asia" course at Vassar at one point drew enrollment of almost 15% of the Vassar student body. An accompanying slide set on images of China in popular media sold more than 700 copies when produced by The Asia Society. This is an inquiry into the dynamics of local and regional government in China, as illustrated by the policies of the warlord Yen Hsi-shan. The schemes Hsi-shan tried to carry out in Shansi constitute one of the last systematic attempts in China to bring about reform along conservative lines. Yan Xishan (8 October 1883 - 22 July 1960) was a Chinese warlord who served in the government of the Republic of China. He effectively controlled the province of Shanxi from the 1911 Xinhai Revolution to the 1949 Communist victory. He survived the machinations of Yuan Shikai, the Warlord Era, the Nationalist Era, the Japanese invasion of China and the subsequent civil war, being forced from office only when the Nationalist armies with which he was aligned had completely lost control of the Chinese mainland, isolating Shanxi from any source of economic or military supply. He has been viewed by Western biographers as a transitional figure who advocated using Western technology to protect Chinese traditions.
