Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The first photo book on Tokyo's iconic fish market - Tsukiji. Tsukiji, the largest fish market in the world, has been based in central Tokyo since 1935. Considered a sacred place by Japanese restaurateurs, it has seen its fame grow exponentially, becoming one of Japan's most visited tourist attractions. But now its identity is at risk: it is likely to move to make way for redevelopment in anticipation of the 2020 Olympics. In this book, Nicola Tanzini dwells on a lesser-known aspect of Tsukiji: the end of the working day, late in the morning. He turns his attention to the internal market (jonai shijo), famous for the tuna auctions, which represents the soul of the place whose key players are the wholesalers, taken in the moments that precede the closure of the market. Everything finally slows down, the frenetic atmosphere of a moment before ceases; thousands of ordinary customers, professionals, curious and tourists, now appear suspended and marked by a state of physical and mental relaxation. The first photo book on the most important fish market in Tokyo, which currently risks losing its identity due to globalization. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

-- The book illustrates how the great artistic and cultural heritage of the Arabs who ruled the island in the 10th and 11th centuries was assimilated and reinterpreted during the Norman reign that followed, achieving its acme in the resplendent age of Ruggero II in the 12th century. Spectacular coastal and mountain landscapes provide the backdrop for visits to villages, castles, gardens, churches and Christianised old mosques. Ten itineraries invite you to discover 91 museums, monuments and sites in Palermo, Monreale, Mazara del Vallo, Salemi, Segesta, Erice, Cefalù and Catania (among others). -- "Sicily was won from the Aghlabids in 827 and passed to the Fatimids in 948. The Norman Conquest of 1061 finally ousted the Muslims from the Island. Organised into three administrative valla - Val di Mazara, Val di Noto, Val Demone - Islamic Sicily produced singularly imaginative crafts and many religious and civic buildings, resurrecting some Byzantine canons, at times still heavily tainted with a late Antique resonance. The Norman monarchy knew how to incorporate, in an innovative and quite manifest way, the contributions of Islamic art. A myriad of monuments attributed to Roger II and William II were enhanced with these elaborate symbioses. The beauty of these sometimes leave us short of adequate words to describe the magnificent palaces and pleasure houses, the luxuriant gardens, and the refined marbles and glowing mosaics produced at this time when Norman kings lived in these surroundings as emirates. Along with the Conca d'Oro, Palermo became the epicentre of the dissemination of Islamic culture on the Island and offers an eloquent introduction to all the Islamic styles of this period in its ecclesiastical and palatial buildings. The admiration felt by the Norman rulers for the masters of the past is manifest in some splendid monuments such as the Tower (Burj) of Alfaina, the Palaces of Maredolce and of Uscibene, and, in particular, in the two Pavilions of Zisa and Cuba. In the province of Agrigento, several remnants of the Arab era have been preserved in the urban fabric, the burjs and the ribats. On the northern coast and in the mountainous regions of the Nebrodi (Vicari, Altavilla Milicia, Caccamo, Campofelice di Roccella, Cefalù), ruins of fortresses and castles are further evidence of this unique relationship. The Arab-Norman synthesis displayed a powerful originality born out of three centuries (12th-14th) of the successful integration of motifs, typologies, techniques and infrastructures." In Italian.
