For several centuries some mapmakers depicted it as an island. The peculiar geography of the Gulf of California naturally led to the conclusion by some that the gulf continued as a strait, ending somewhere north on the Pacific Coast. Europeans were fascinated with islands, which they believed held untold riches and exotic peoples. Polk traces this myth of California from it's earliest years to the latter years of the 17th. Century. With a large number of b&w full-page and text illustrations of ancient maps. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Illustrated soft covers with the lightest of wear, contents complete in solid binding. Near Fine condition. *** 9 inches tall by 6 inches.
