'After emigrating to the United States [in 1938], Wrinch focused on the application of mathematical principles to the interpretation of X-ray crystallographic dat…a of complex crystal structures. This work was set out in detail in her text Fourier Transforms and Structure Factors which was published in 1946. Von Neumann wrote in a letter to Norbert Wiener that he would consult with Irving Langmuir and Wrinch regarding the possibility of using electronic computers to determine protein structure via X-ray crystallographic analysis. A meeting between von Neumann, Langmuir, Wrinch and A D Booth did indeed take place in Schenectady on Wednesday 16 April 1947. After discussions they decided (correctly it turned out) that computers would not give an immediate solution because of the difficult problem of determining phases. Carey sums up Wrinch's contribution: By advancing a theory of protein structure that reached beyond the boundaries of classical biology to encompass chemistry, physics, mathematics, and philosophy, she contributed to the development of molecular biology by inspiring other scientists to take a multidisciplinary approach to the study of life' (MacTutor History of Mathematics Web site, citing C.W. Carey Jr, 'Dorothy Maud Wrinch,' American National Biography 24 (Oxford, 1999), 69-71, and 'J von Neumann, The cybernetical movement: von Neumann's letter to Norbert Wiener, 1946,' Kybernetes 21 (4) (1992), 7-10). 'In 1930 she published a book on parenting, The Retreat from Parenthood, under the pseudonym Jean Ayling' (San Jose State University Virtual Museum). 'When Russell [a Cambridge friend and influence on Wrinch] went to China he left her with the task of arranging the publication of Wittgenstein's Tractatus in England. . She also wrote a number of papers with Harold Jeffreys on scientific method; these formed the basis of his 1931 book Scientific Inference. In the Nature obituary Jeffreys wrote, 'I should like to put on record my appreciation of the substantial contribution she made to [our joint] work, which is the basis of all my later work on scientific inference.' In 1932 Wrinch was one of founders of the Biotheoretical Gathering, an inter-disciplinary group that sought to explain life by discovering how proteins work. Also involved were Joseph Needham, C.H. Waddington J.D. Bernal and Dorothy Crowfoot Hodgkin. From then on Wrinch could be described as a theoretical biologist. She developed a model of protein structure, which she called the 'cyclol' structure. The model generated considerable controversy and was attacked by the chemist Linus Pauling. In these debates Wrinch's lack of training in chemistry was a great weakness. After the War evidence accumulated that the model was wrong but Wrinch continued working on it' (Wikipedia). Crowfoot Hodgkin wrote in Wrinch's obituary that she was 'a brilliant and controversial figure who played a part in the beginnings of much of present research in molecular biology.' On a more personal level, Crowfoot Hodgkin wrote, 'I like to think of her as she was when I first knew her, gay, enthusiastic and adventurous, courageous in face of much misfortune and very kind.' 'Although she did not win, Wrinch was nominated for a Nobel Prize' (Biography by Jackie DiGiovanni on Suite 101 Web site). 'After fruitless attempts to find a publisher in Germany for Wittgenstein's Abhandlung, and after the refusal by the Cambridge University Press, Dorothy Wrinch turned to a friend, C. K. Ogden, the editor of a scholarly series, The International Library of Psychology, Philosophy and Scientific Method, published by Kegan Paul. Ogden showed more understanding for the signficance of Wittgenstein's work than the publishers and editors previously approached. He proposed to Russell to publish the work in the series of which he was the general editor' (Cambridge Wittgenstein Archive).
