Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - 'The Idiot' is a masterpiece of psychological fiction and a cornerstone of 19th-century world literature. The narrative follows the life of Prince Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin, a man of pure heart and childlike simplicity who returns to the complex, cynical world of Saint Petersburg high society after years of medical treatment in Switzerland. Often described as Fedor Dostoieffsky's attempt to portray a 'wholly good man,' Myshkin's innocence and lack of guile stand in stark contrast to the greed, obsession, and moral decay of those around him.As the Prince becomes entangled in a volatile web of relationships, most notably with the tragic Nastasya Filippovna and the proud Aglaya Yepanchina, the work explores profound themes of spirituality, suffering, and the struggle for human redemption. Dostoieffsky masterfully examines whether a person of Christ-like compassion and radical honesty can truly survive in a society driven by material gain and ego. 'The Idiot' remains an essential exploration of the human soul, celebrated for its intense character studies and its timeless inquiry into the nature of goodness and the tragic consequences of misplaced virtue. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Dust Jacket. I believe this to be the first edition of this translation, although exactly how to determine this I do not know. A statement on the copyright page avers that this volume has been registered with the Minister of the Interior. library section, in April 1896. The book certainly looks old enough. The text was printed on medium-grade stock, which has markedly age-toned around the page edges, but which is quite sound. The binding is quite delightful--a lively marbled paper, with green buckram and a leather label. The book was withdrawn from a college library, and a library call number defaces the spine. Otherwise, the binding is sound, with only slight edgewear. There is a pretty library bookplate on the front endpaper. There is a card pocket and blank call slip at the back. The name of the library is stamped on the bottom edge of the textblock. Fast shipping, careful packing.; Ex-library.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good (Plus). No Jacket. First American Edition. Boston & London: Roberts Brothers & Elkin Mathews and John Lane, 1894. First published in 1846, this is the great Russian writer's first book, an epistolary novel dealing with the effects of poverty. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First American Edition, published in the same year as the English version. A scarce title. Blue/gray cloth binding, decorated on the front cover with a drawing by Aubrey Beardsley (which is also reproduced on the Title Page). Gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; xvi, 187 pages, with eight pages of publisher adverts in the rear. The Preface is by the Irish "realistic" novelist George Moore. Very mildly bumped (really just a touch). Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Very Good. First Edition. London: Elkin Mathews and John Lane, 1894. First English Language Edition. Octavo (20cm); publisher's yellow pictorial cloth blocked in black from a design by Aubrey Beardsley; xx,191,[1],15pp. Cloth a bit dust-soiled and toned at margins, especially spine, corners bumped, textblock a bit brittle due to inferior paper quality, contemporary ex libris and bookseller ticket to front pastedown. Very Good, bright and sound overall. The first English language translation of Dostoevsky's first novel, originally published in Russian in 1846. The work is told through a series of letters between two impoverished distant cousins and is today deemed Russia's first "social novel." According to legend, Dostoevsky's friend Dmitri Grigorovich read the manuscript in one sitting, "then rushed out into the middle of the night to proclaim to the world the advent of a new Gogol" (Carol A. Flath, "Dostoevsky's Secrets" (2009), pp. 3, 13). …
