Wraps very good with institutional ink stamp inside front; interiors ne…ar fine except for pencilled ticks and crosses and underlines to a few pages. The ink stamp is that of the Al Areen Wildlife Sanctuary (also known as the Mohamed bin Zayed Nature Reserve), which was founded in 1976 and features in an article included here, highlighting its importance as "not only unique and beautiful, but also tragically rare" (p38). The Bahrain Natural History Society (BNHS) was formed in December the same year, with Abdulaziz al-Hassan as Honorary President, meeting at the British Council. Early outings included the mangrove swamps, bird watching on a local rubbish tip, the desert, and mostly significantly, surveys of the remote and unspoilt Hawar Islands. This report was edited by Trevor Hallam (Chair) and Doug Herdson (Committee Member), who also wrote much of the content. Other contributors include Richard King (BNHS Reporter), Gary Smith (of the Al Areen Wildlife Sanctuary), and David Bray. The most substantial article is a write up of the Hawar Islands surveys, which were facilitated by the Interior and Defence Ministers, and the Hawar Police. It contains much prevously unpublished material on their natural history, marine life, reptiles and amphibians, the initial aerial survey, a classified bird list, a write up on the sooty falcon, and mammals (pp43-64). Other content includes an annotated list of birds seen in Bahrain (Nov 1976 - Dec 1977); an introduction to the shore life; Al-Areen Wildlife Sanctuary (with lists and animals and major plant species); monthly activity summaries; and bibliography.
