Moved to Washington DC as a young man and was employed engraving plates for the "Narrative of the U.S. Exploring Expedition," published between 1844 and 1874. He went to San Francisco during the gold rush in 1849, where he operated a grocery and livery store for one year before returning to Washington. This is one in a limited edition of 600 copies published by the San Mateo County Historical Association in celebration of the 1849 centennial. Bound as issued in decorated blue cloth boards. Dougal (1822-1895) was a Washington, D. C., engraver who purchased the ship "Galinda" to take goods and passengers to San Francisco in 1849. He returned via Panama in 1850. This volume is a collection of his log, letters and pencil sketches from his travels. It includes 3 pencil sketches from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; 10 from California, including a panoramic view of San Francisco, 5 from Acapulco, Mexico, and two from the Chagres River in Panama.
