Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Wilbur and Orville Wright made the world's first successful controlled, heavier-than-air powered flight on December 17, 1903, after four years of glider experiments and scientific study. At what is now the Wright Brothers National Memorial, the brothers discovered and developed the fundamental principles of mechanical flight, setting in motion a series of events that allowed the first generation of flight to travel from Kitty Hawk to the moon in the lifetime of a human being. Located in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and administered by the National Park Service, the Wright Brothers National Memorial features a full-scale reproduction of the 1903 flying machine, an engine block from the original 1903 flyer, and a precise reproduction of the wind tunnel that the Wrights used to conduct their early experiments. Today, the park's mission is to commemorate the Wrights' success and to interpret the continuing worldwide significance of their dream, vision, and achievement. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Cape Hatteras National Seashore was authorized by Congress on August 17, 1937, and established on January 12, 1953. As the nation's first national seashore, it encompasses 30,000 acres and crosses three islands, Bodie, Hatteras, and Ocracoke, for approximately 70 miles. Nearby Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, located within the authorized seashore boundary, is 5,880 acres. Over the centuries, the seashore has witnessed major historic events, including the landing of the first English explorers, the death of Blackbeard the pirate, Civil War battles, German U-boat attacks, hundreds of shipwrecks, and devastating hurricanes. Descended from horses brought over by Spanish explorers, the Ocracoke ponies still roam the landscape. This National Park Service unit also includes the majestic Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras, and Ocracoke Lighthouses. The seashore is a haven for wildlife and recreational beachgoers. Cape Hatteras National Seashore showcases the rich natural and cultural heritage of America's first national seashore. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Outer Banks National Scenic Byway stretches the length of North Carolina's 200-mile barrier islands. The unique maritime culture shared by the 21 coastal villages led to the road's designation as a National Scenic Byway in 2009. The route is entered from the north at Whalebone Junction in Nags Head, North Carolina, and from the south at the North River Bridge on US 70 East, just past Beaufort, North Carolina. Encompassing 142.5 driving miles, six and a half hours of travel time, and two ferries, the byway traverses Hatteras Island, Ocracoke, and Down East in Dare County and Hyde and Carteret Counties. This book explores the region's rich maritime history, culture, and traditions, such as boatbuilding, decoy carving, fishing, lighthouse-keeping, and living with the powerful forces of water and wind. Travelers can experience local seafood, ascend three lighthouses, and discover outdoor trails and endless miles of marsh and beaches offering bird-watching and solitude. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. For over 200 years the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse has resolutely cast its light over waters known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic," shepherding mariners along North Carolina's Outer Banks. In 1803, construction of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse completed. Standing just shy of 200 feet, it was--and remains--the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. Due to politics, funding, and its precarious location, it took great effort to erect and protect a lighthouse built on a barrier island. The supporters and caretakers were many, including Alexander Hamilton in the 1700s and children donating coins to a statewide preservation campaign in 1982. Beginning in Augustin-Jean Fresnel's lens laboratory in France and stretching across the Atlantic to the beaches of Hatteras Island where the lighthouse keepers labored, its history is punctuated by war, shipwrecks, hurricanes, and cutting-edge technology. In the 21st century, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse continues to send out its beam to mariners.Mary Ellen Riddle is the education curator at the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum on Hatteras Island. She is the author of Outer Banks Shipwrecks: Graveyard of the Atlantic from Arcadia Publishing. Douglas Stover served as cultural resources manager and historian at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. He retired from the National Park Service in 2013 after 32 years. Stover is an author and editor of several publications, including Cape Hatteras National Seashore from Arcadia Publishing. The Cape Hatteras National Park Service provided most of the historic images that bring to life the journey of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse from an early need to an epic relocation.
