Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. Traveling back to remote antiquity, this book chronicles the Maltmen Craft in Glasgow, Scotland, an esteemed incorporation of malt producers and mealmen that played a prominent role in the city's history. Initially sanctioned by the Letter of Guildry in 1605, the Maltmen's status and privileges were further solidified by ratification from Parliament in 1672, underscoring their long-standing presence and importance in Glasgow's social and economic fabric. The narrative traces their evolution through centuries of triumphs and tribulations, from the exclusive privileges granted to their craft to the abolition of such monopolies in the 19th century. The abolition of their exclusive rights enabled the Maltmen to focus their efforts on charitable works, supporting their aged members, widows, and children, as well as educational initiatives within the community. Readers are given insights into the Craft's governance, its Visitor and Master Court, the election of its collector, the responsibilities of key-keepers, and the laws and regulations that have shaped its organization. This chronicle is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history of guilds, Scottish social history, or the story of how the Maltmen Craft became an enduring and benevolent presence in the heart of Glasgow. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
