Cloth. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. 280pp, illustrations, line drawings. Volume 3 in the Ohio Historical Collections. Downes' work is still often quoted. From the Preface: The central theme throughout is the frontier. All of the early institutions of Ohio were the product of the frontier conditions. Its religious life was dominated by schism and the spread of the evangelical denominations. Its commercial life developed a dependence on the downstream trade that weakened its relation to the East. In their relation to the soil the people universally insisted on free or cheap lands because of the rigorous frontier conditions to which they were subjected. In their political life they built up a democracy that revealed every weakness of the Ordinance of 1787 as an instrument of frontier government." Outstanding. A very good book in a very good DJ with just minor rubbing to head and tail of the spine. 280pg. Very small piece missing upper edge, front flap. Light soiling, stain to top edge. Penciled notation on fep to additonal research.
