En 1886 terminó de escribir su primera novela, The Firm of Girdlestone que no se publicaría hasta 1889-1890, por entregas en la revista People. En 1887 apareció la primera aventura de Sherlock Holmes, A Study in Scarlet. Escribió cerca de trescientos relatos, entre cuentos cortos y novelas. También escribió más de mil ensayos y no se olvidó del teatro ni de la poesía. En 1930 la editorial americana, Doubleday, Doran & Co. publicó en veinticuatro volúmenes The Crowborough Edition of the Works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, unas obras completas que agrupaban veinte novelas, ciento sesenta y un relatos y su autobiografía. A pesar de que se consideraba un escritor de novelas históricas en la línea de su admirado maestro Sir Walter Scott, Conan Doyle será siempre recordado por ser el creador del más grande de los detectives privados, el rey del análisis y la deducción: Sherlock Holmes.
