Decline and Fall of Prospect Hill: The End of a Decade of Manorial Living The Decline and Fall of Prospect Hill: The End of a Decade of Manorial Living (covering January 1 - December 31, 1989) is an incompletely edited, unpublished diary manuscript by Daniel Carleton Gajdusek, the 1976 Nobel laureate who identified kuru. It is one volume in his annual journals documenting life at Prospect Hill, the dilapidated eighteenth-century estate in Frederick, Maryland, where he housed a large surrogate family of mostly Papua New Guinean and Melanesian boys. Key facts: It follows the 1988 volume, Duodeca-Log: A Journal of Twelve Departures From and Returns to Prospect Hill, and precedes the 1990 volume, Year of Reentrenchment in a Wonderland of Infectious Amyloids. The manuscript was held in the personal collection of Michael Alpers in Fremantle, Australia, and is cited in scholarship on Gajdusek's household (e.g., Family Man in Oceania, 2007, and Carleton's Kids in The Journal of Pacific History, 2009). This Journal is in fine condition and has no damage, wear or blemishes. See photos.…

Viliuisk Encephalomyelitis: Journals of Unrequited Quests for Etiology is a 311-page self-published monograph by Daniel Carleton Gajdusek, released in January 1996 by the Laboratory of Central Nervous System Studies, NINDS, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. It compiles Gajdusek's personal field journals and research notes from 1976, 1979, 1991, 1992, and 1993, chronicling his decades-long, ultimately unsuccessful quest to identify the causative agent of Viliuisk encephalomyelitis—an endemic, fatal neurological disease of the Sakha (Yakut) people of central Siberia. The work documents Gajdusek's repeated attempts to isolate the pathogen, test genetic, geobiochemical, and ecological hypotheses, and trace the disease's spread from the mid-Viliui region to areas around Yakutsk. Despite strong clinical, neuropathologic, and epidemiologic evidence for an infectious etiology, the causative agent remains unidentified to this day This Journal is in fine condition and has no damage, wear or blemishes.
