An autobiographical introduction traces her hardscrabble origins after which she emigrated to New York in 1855, becoming a professional spiritual medium. She argues the religious and scientific basis of humankind's belief in the Mysteries of the Unknown stem from ancient astrology, not inconsistent with Christianity. Sets forth the tenets of spiritualism as a healing art and force for good in the world. By focussing on these processual homecomings, Emma Parkers study asks what it means to be at home in memories of empire, whether in the settler farms of Southern Rhodesia, or amidst the neon lights of Shanghais International Settlement. These discussions trace the legacies of empire to the habitations and detritus of everyday life, from mansions and modest railway huts, to empty swimming pools, heirlooms, and photograph albums.Exploring works by Penelope Lively, J. G. Ballard, Doris Lessing, and Janet Frame, this study establishes new connections between authors usually discussed for their fiction, and who have been hitherto unrecognised as post-imperial life writers. This book argues that, despite Pauls often dramatic and critical descriptions of non-Christians, his letters reveal a deep concern for the presence of outsiders and for their opinion of Christians. Parker suggests that outsiders are enormously important to Paul: they determine whether Christian communities dwindle or thrive, while also playing a key role in helping such communities to understand and shape their purpose as missional disciples, develop their thinking and practice around normal daily events and relationships and even shape how they understand God. Parker offers a careful exegesis of the main texts within the Pauline corpus, revealing a sensitivity to the outsider; including 1 Thessalonians, Romans, 1 Corinthians and the Pastoral Epistles.
