Greely, Dr. Henry Fairfield Osborn. Francis T. Miller documents the history of North and South polar expeditions and exploration from a millennia past and culminating in the historic achievements of Admiral Byrd in 1920s. An absolutely stunning example of fine book craftsmanship. Following the advancement of airplanes and flight in the 1920s, with the endeavors of Admiral Byrd, frame the milieu and historical perspective of this volume. Author Miller lauds Byrd, but this study is rather more and conprehensive in its historical narrative review of polar exploration. From front flap: "The Fight to Conquer the Ends of the Earth; Byrd's Accomplishments Unparalleled. Byrd was lauded as the first man to fly over both the top and bottom of the world. As a noble and inspiring proof of the courage of man these accomplishments stand alone. As a stalwart example of the American spirit and an inspiration to every living person in the world today and generations to come, these feats challenge the courage and stamina of the world. The historical import of Byrd's actions can only be appreciated against the background of the thousand year fight that preceded. The scene is set on the chessboard of lattitude and longitude with the earth as the battle arena and the top and bottom of the world as its objective. Here are the elements of great romance and tragedy in vivid contrast. Victorious life and treacherous death. With a backdrop of elemental physical suffering beyond comprehension, of gaunt starvation and lingering death, Miller posits that we live in an age of science and technology where Byrd and his allies are able to accomplish in a few hours of flight what more than ten centuries of blood trails failed to do!"
