In December 1854 they travelled to Burrumbeep station, settling in the Phillip's Flat district, in what is now Cathcart, west of Ararat, where three more children were born, making a total of 11 children, six daughters and five sons. It reconstructs the history of the Djabwurrung Aboriginal people the Ararat, Stawell, and Hamilton districts from 1836 - when they first encountered European intruders on thei…r lands - to the Federation of Australia in 1901. There are two realities that confront this study and they are the 'fact of conquest' - the fact that the Djabwurrung people were subjected to economic, political, and cultural domination as a consequence of colonization; and the fact of their near-ethnocide - their almost total annihilation over space and time. Chapter two provides a detailed understanding of the Djabwurrung - where and how they lived, and how they were economically and politically organized. The chapter concludes by discussing the extent of the knowledge the Djabwurrung may have had of Europeans prior to the pastoral invasion of their land in 1838.Chapter three seeks to understand the European invasion by asking who the invaders were, and what was their motivation and mode of occupation, and what they may have known of the Djabwurrung. The nature of the articulation of a hunting and gathering mode of production and the squatter capitalist mode of production is the central focus of Chapter four. Chapter five reconstructs the experience of the Djabwurrung for the remaining years of the 1840s, and considers attempts by the state through the Port Phillip Aboriginal Protectorate to protect and resocialize the Djabwurrung. The 1850s are the focus of Chapter six. The gold rushes represent a second wave of dispossession. Essentially the chapter seeks to understand Djabwurrung relationships with European colonial society, particularly in the light of the demand for their labour with the increased labour costs and labour shortage caused by the gold rushes. Chapter seven is concerned with the 1860s, a decade I have described as producing a third wave of dispossession when the remnant Djabwurrung people were reduced to the status of 'things', and were often treated as objects of amusement, pity, and censure. Many Djabwurrung left their homelands during this period and went to government stations and Christian missions - although a few elderly Djabwurrung were allowed to remain on their natal lands. Chapter eight is concerned with the 1870s, and examines the various reports from the three honorary correspondents who had the most to do with the Djabwurrung - Charles Gray at Nareeb Nareeb; Peter Learmonth at Hamilton; and Andrew Porteous at Carngham; it examines Djabwurrung deaths and inquests and marriages in the 1870s; ongoing alcohol abuse; and particular episodes in the lives of individuals. The focus of chapter nine is the final two decades of the nineteenth century from 1881 until 1901 and considers Djabwurrung deaths and marriages in this period; the assault of Sambo by three youths at Dunkeld and his subsequent death in Hamilton is examined; Thomas Ware's wish to die in his own country; developments in the life of Tokas Johnson; the participation of the Djabwurrung in community events and sporting carnivals; and examines the 1886 Act which redefined 'Aboriginality' and had fundamental ramifications for the Aboriginal people of Victoria. The chapter concludes with demographic considerations and examines the last known fluent speakers of the Djabwurrung language. In 1975 anthropologist Aldo Massola published a history of the Coranderrk Aboriginal station in which he included a condensation of the first three parts, and Maurice Robarts, Natalie's son, provided him with a summary of the f…ourth part. Massola had spent two years working on the manuscript, and it was published posthumously in November 1975, four months after his death in July. The value of Natalie Robarts's diary is easily demonstrated. Rather than a cold historical narrative of the comings and goings of station managers and officials and the evolution of government policy, it allows us to humanise life on the Coranderrk station. Through her pages we are given an intimate picture of the rituals of life on the station, and we see the Aboriginal people of Coranderrk actively striving to protect their rights and assert their connection to their country. Maurice Robarts, the diarist's son and Liane's grandfather, had loaned the first three parts of the diary to Aldo Massola, presumably in 1973 or 1974. Today only the fourth part remains in the hands of the Robarts family. What happened to the first three parts is not known. It is possible that they were never returned to the Robarts family, owing to the untimely death of Aldo Massola in July 1975. Chapter One presents a genealogy of the Robarts family, which is a work in progress. Chapter Two reproduces and annotates the Massola (1975) transcript of the first three parts of Natalie Robarts's diary, spanning the years from 1909 until 1917. Chapter Three publishes the fourth book of Natalie Robarts Diary, in full, along with Maurice Robarts's summary and Massola's limited commentary. Chapter Four publishes official reports from Charles Robarts during his years as station manager; along with relevant newspaper articles from this time; and published reminiscences from those who visited the station during Robarts's tenure - such as Elinor M. Clowes (1911); Frederick Spurr (1915) and Viscount Northcliffe (1923). Chapter Five re-publishes Natalie Robarts's publications - her (1913) article 'The Victorian Aborigine as he is' noting differences between the published version and a draft copy found in her papers; and her (1934) publication of her father-in-law's reminiscences, along with three unpublished articles found in her papers. Chapter Six publishes for the first time, a family history manuscript written by Maurice Robarts, the second son of Charles and Natalie Robarts. Chapter Seven re-publishes six newspaper articles, a letter to the editor and the draft of another article on William Barak from Oswald Charles Robarts, the journalist son of Charles and Natalie Robarts. Chapter Eight re-presents a three-part history of Coranderrk published in the Healesville Guardian in 1943 by Ethel Shaw, the daughter of Joseph Shaw, who was Coranderrk station manager from 1884 until his resignation from ill-health in 1908. The next chapter presents three scrapbooks of photographs and images relevant to the history of Coranderrk. The final chapter presents a paper on the life and times of Ernest Leuba, Natalie Robarts's father.
