Ree Dragonette was a dedicated craftswoman and nurturer of poetry in New York City for decades until her death in 1979. Issued in 1962, Like Pharao's Eye Like Onyx Stone is her first work of poetry to be published. Following a nearly decade-long "silence" (as she referred to the years between 1950 and 1958)---a period she dedica…ted to raising her three children---she began writing again. Her creative output was spurred by her organizational work in the west village, coordinating readings at Goody's, the Harlequin, Le Metro and Les Deux Megots. By the time LPELOS was published, she was participating in performances blending jazz and poetry at the Village Vanguard, and eventually she would perform with the Eric Dolphy Quintet at the Town Hall concert, organized by Martin Mitchell and Ross Fagin. The performance has since been described by Ree's friend and fellow author Calvin Hernton as "unprecedented", featuring many poems from LPELOS, which has since become an incredibly scarce publication. Featuring the collage work of Don Katzman on the cover and an introduction from Howard Ant. [information quoted from The American Voice 29: Lost Women's Writing, 1992, 'Ree Dragonette : A Brief Memoir' by D.H. Melhem]. Very good, wraps lightly chipped at crown of spine and edges, gently worn otherwise with some discoloration to rear cover most likely a sun stain Saddle-stapled, [octavo] in illustrated b/w paper wraps, 30 pp Limited numbered first edition, #173 of 500 copies. Designed by Don Katzman (illustratore).
