Was den Aufenthalt bei ihnen jedoch besonders gefährlich macht, sind die umherstreifenden Wilderer, die die Bestände der Bonobos stark dezimieren und auch vor Mord nicht zurückschrecken, wenn sie sich in ihrem Tun gestört fühlen. Als sich der Autor in die in Anarchie versunkene Republik Kongo (Zaire) aufmacht, um die Bonoboforscherin van Krunkelsven zu besuchen, ist ihm klar, daß dies alles andere als ein Spaziergang wird. Was er allerdings nicht erwartet, ist die Begegnung mit einer ebenso anmutigen wie energischen jungen Frau, in die er sich Hals über Kopf verliebt. Ist der Regenwald Zentralafrikas einer romantischen Liebesbeziehung ohnehin nicht gerade förderlich, so erweist sich zudem die Organisation und Durchführung der Expeditionen als überaus mühselig. Ständig treten neue Schwierigkeiten auf, zum Beispiel mit der einheimischen Bevölkerung oder mit den vielen unangenehmen tierischen Bewohnern des Dschungels. Doch unverdrossen treibt die Biologin die Expedition voran, während der verliebte Autor mit Humor und leichter Ironie die Entbehrungen und Ängste, aber auch Überraschungen und kleinen Siege dieses Lebens festhält. Kein Triumphzug der Wissenschaft, sondern das aufmerksame und spannende Portrait eines geschundenen Landes und aufopferungsvollen Lebens für unsere nächsten Verwandten.
