Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles America's first state-sponsored mission to the Pacific Northwest, tracing the journeys of explorers Lewis and Clark, its captains, and their group of soldier-scientists. The author draws on a wealth of original research, including overlooked primary source materials and indigenous oral histories, to tell a tale of indigenous encounters, scientific discovery, and the impact of this expedition on westward expansion. Covering topics from the corps' medical journals to the lasting legacy of colonialism, the author reveals this pivotal chapter in American history in full color, reframing the Lewis and Clark expedition away from the triumphalist lens of westward expansion and towards a full appreciation of its complexities. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Dreer made his fortune as a jewelry manufacturer, and was a noted philanthropist and autograph collector. He donated his entire collection to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, with which he was for many years associated, and served as the institution's vice-president."Ferdinand Julius Dreer's collection of manuscripts, which eventually totaled fifteen thousand items, began when he received the gift of two letters: one written by Old Bull, the famous Norwegian violinist, and the other by Lydia Maria Child, American author and abolitionist. He managed to obtain documents written by emperors, kings, religious leaders, philosophers, politicians, economists, lawyers, scientists, military leaders, explorers, architects, sculptors, authors, musicians, and painters. He obtained eighty-four letters of the famous George Washington, fifty-one written by Thomas Jefferson, and at least one each signed by all twenty-three Presidents before McKinley. He was especially proud of his set of documents carrying the signatures of each of the signers of the Declaration of Independence." - Joseph George, Jr., Lincoln Family Documents in the F. J.
