Ierre Drevet, The Elder (1663-1738) Was Born At Loire In The Lyonnais, The Son Of Estienne Drevet, And Began His Studies With Germain Audran In Lyons, Continuing Them With Gérard Audran In Paris. His Progress Was Rapid, And In 1696 He Was Made Court Engraver. In 1707 He Was Admitted To Membership In The Académie Des Beaux-Arts, His Reception Picture Being An Engraving Of Robert De Cotte. Hyacinthe Rigaud's Portraits Were In High Favour At The End Of The Seventeenth Century And Drevet Was The First To Encounter The Difficulties Of Translating Into Black And White The Natural Appearance Of Texture And Materials In The Latter's Oil Paintings. Grand in octavo, sobre et agréable reliure en demi chagrin grenat postérieure, dos à cinq fx. nerfs, auteur et titre dans les caissons. Première édition Illustrée, par Johannes Drevet * tirée à 500 ex., celui-ci 293/450 sur vélin après cinquante japon, XV-310pp(6) ff., Très bien conservé (frottements d'usage sans gravité) dans une reliure dont les coins sont bien piquants. Les ?uvres de Johannes Drevet capturent l'architecture, les rues, les traboules et l'atmosphère du quartier du Vieux-Lyon, avec ses passages secrets maçonnés datant du Moyen Âge, ses échoppes. Ce travail à l'eau-forte, s'intéressant à l'histoire de Lyon, particulièrement le Vieux-Lyon, a préservé la réalité visuelle d'un patrimoine urbain et humain considérablement modifié ou disparu, constituant de fait une source primaire indispensable pour les historiens, archéologues urbains (et bibliophiles) . En effet, sans ses eaux-fortes, une partie significative de la documentation iconographique du patrimoine urbain lyonnais aurait été perdue. En 1896, Léon Galle reprit certaines gravures de Johannes Drevet pour écrire "Une promenade à travers le vieux Lyon", influence directe de Drevet sur l'historiographie lyonnaise en son temps. Aujourd'hui, son ?uvre est conservée dans des collections publiques importantes, notamment au Musée d'Orsay. Son atelier, cis au n°4 de cette rue fut repris par son fils Joanny qui étendit les talents du père aux lavis aquarellés. Pierre Auguste Bleton, historien emblématique du Lyonnais, collabora étroitement avec Drevet et à sans doute produit les documents iconographiques les plus complets sur le Lyon de cette époque. Son travail est aujourd'hui une des sources incontournables pour les historiens urbains tout autant que les bibliophiles passionnés dans les éditions rares de Lyon.
