Trade paperback. Condizione: Very good. x, 182 pages. Illustrated cover. Illustrations. Maps. Bibliography. Index. Cover has a mild curve up at the front edge. Introduction by Walter Muir Whitehill. Previous owner's name in ink inside front cover. This work covers the Waterfront to the Fenway, Beacon Hill to Roxbury, and the Bac…k Bay to Cambridge. The Boston Society of Architects is one of the oldest and largest chapters of the AIA. The Boston Society of Architects (BSA) is a nonprofit membership organization committed to architecture, design and the built environment. On June 20, 1867, approximately 50 architects convened in the City of Boston to sign the articles of association for the Boston Society of Architects. Since this time, the BSA has grown to approximately 4,000 members. The BSA became the eastern Massachusetts regional association of the AIA in 1870. It has sister chapters in Central Massachusetts and Western Massachusetts. The membership of the BSA supports ArchitectureBoston Magazine, an ideas-focused publication edited by Boston Globe columnist Renée Loth; and BSA Space, a gallery for public architecture and design-related exhibitions. They convene annually at the Architecture Boston Expo convention. The BSA promotes and enhances the practice of architecture and design through such programs as building-industry conventions Build Boston and Residential Design and Construction, skills training, design lectures, job and college fairs, ARE study groups, Common Boston Week and more. ArchitectureBoston is the BSA's ideas magazine. The Boston Society of Architects has brought the centuries together with words and pictures in a unique publication. Invaluable to the more-than-casual visitor, and indispensable to the serious student of architecture, it is a lively resource for community advocates seeking to understand and improve their neighborhoods. From Beacon Hill, "a brick Acropolis for the Athens of America," to the tantalizing mix of the historic and the avant garde that is Cambridge, the ideas and events of the past can be read in today's treasury of '"build form." Long known as a city with wall-to-wall history, Boston has invested its elderly structure with new and relevant uses, while adding new building that respect much of what has gone before. Walter Muir Whitehill (1905 - 1978) was an American writer, historian, medievalist, and the Director and Librarian of the Boston Athenaeum from 1946 to 1973. He was also editor for publications of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts from 1946 to 1978. From 1951 to 1972 Whitehill was a professor at Harvard University. Whitehill received his AB and AM degrees from Harvard in 1926 and 1929. Shortly after this he married Jane Revere Coolidge, a descendant of Thomas Jefferson and eldest daughter of Julian Coolidge. He then went to England where he received a Ph.D. from the University of London. In 1932 he did in Santiago de Compostela the first full transcription of the medieval Codex Calixtinus. Whitehill was selected to deliver an important televised address about the history and development of Boston on the occasion of the Bicentennial Celebration of the United States. On July 11, 1976, he spoke at the Old State House in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II, the Mayor of Boston, the Governor of Massachusetts, and a large audience. The text of his address was printed in a publication by the Bostonian Society, which operates the Old State House on behalf of the National Park Service. He delivered the commencement address in 1974 at the College of William and Mary. Although Whitehill's publishing career focused on Bostoniana, his significant work on Spanish medieval topics represented the first American interest in the subject. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. Mark Driscoll (illustratore).
