A collection of short accounts by the officers and men of all ranks who fought on Attu, the westernmost island of the Aleutians. This string of islands, "acquired by the United States in 1867 as part of the Alaska Purchase," extended some one thousand miles west from the mainland of Alaska. Only about 600 miles from Siberia and about 650 miles from a Japanese base in the Kurile Islands, Attu had a grand total in population some 45 native Aleuts and two mainland Americans. The climate here was described as unpleasant: Engulfed in fog most of the time, which could usually not be dispersed by the frequent high winds. The terrain here was described as a nasty combination of "steep, jagged crags, knifelike ridges," and "boggy tundra." All of these elements together arguing against the use of aircraft and vehicles. To top off all of that physical description, "One writer has called Attu 'the lonesomest spot this side of hell.'" As if all of the foregoing were not enough, American forces were faced off against the tough and experienced Japanese in armed combat. This little book testifies to the valor of all of these men.

FIRST EDITION. The account is based on the travels of Captain William Drummond Stewart, a Scottish nobleman, although it is believed that Webb himself wrote it. During the winter of 1836-1837, Stewart met the young American artist Alfred Jacob Miller whom he invited to accompany him to a fur trade rendezvous, a meeting held annually among traders, Native Americans, and Rocky Mountain trappers. Before reaching their destination at Horse Creek (near the present-day border of Colorado and Wyoming), they traveled northwest along the Kansas River to the Platte, passing such landmarks as Scott's Bluff and Chimney Rock. The rendezvous concluded, they headed for the Wind River range of the Rockies in Wyoming, where they spent time hunting before returning to St. Louis in the fall of 1837. The meeting resulted in the present account and in Miller's comprehensive paintings of trappers and Native Americans in the western U.S. fur trade. In search of adventure, he traveled west to the Rockies where he remained for several years, participating in the fur trade and encountering many well-known traders, explorers, trappers, and mountain men -- including Jim Bridger, Thomas Fitzpatrick, Benjamin Boneville, and French-Canadian Cree hunter Antoine Clement, with whom Stewart maintained a same-sex relationship over the course of a decade.
