Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of the famed 1682 treaty between William Penn and Native American tribes. Penn's 'Great Treaty,' unlike other colonial treaties made to acquire land, was about friendship and peace. The author draws on historical records and archaeological evidence to piece together the events leading up to and following the treaty. Through the exploration of the treaty's stipulations and the analysis of speeches made by Penn and tribal chiefs, the book highlights Penn's innovative diplomacy and his commitment to fair dealings with Native Americans. The book also examines the lasting legacy of the treaty, which established a unique relationship between Penn's colony and the tribes. Ultimately, this book sheds new light on Penn's treaty, revealing its significance as a groundbreaking model for peaceful coexistence between European settlers and Native Americans. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a fascinating exploration of the Chinese writing system and its unique characteristics. It challenges the widely-held belief that Chinese characters represent ideas directly, arguing instead that they are connected to words and sounds. The author delves into the history and evolution of the system, examining its use by various nations, including the Cochinchinese and Japanese. By comparing the Chinese writing system to other graphic methods, such as syllabic and alphabetic systems, the author sheds light on its strengths and limitations. Through insightful analysis, this book provides a fresh perspective on the nature of language, writing and the connections between them, making it an invaluable resource for linguists, historians, and anyone interested in the intricacies of human communication. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. …

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. First. THE HOWES-SIEBERT COPY. First edition in English. Philadelphia: M'Carty & Davis, 1834. Octavo in 4s (9" x 5¾", 229mm x 146mm). [Full collation available.] With 5 lithographed plates. Bound in the publisher's printed boards. On the spine, paper label with title, author, and translator. Fore- and lower edges of the text-block untrimmed. Joints split, the front board precarious. Losses to head and tail with a loss of 1 3/4" at the tail and chips to the paper label on the spine. Ink ownership inscription of Edwin Walter to the recto of the first free end paper. A very little foxing throughout. Some spots of soiling to the boards. Damp-stain by the upper edge throughout, not affecting the text. New Sweden was the earliest colonial settlement in the Delaware River valley (covering parts of present-day Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey), established in 1638 at Fort Cristina, now Wilmington. The present work contains valuable primary historical source material: Campanius Holm (ensis; i.e., from Stockholm), who never traveled to America, based his account on notes left by his grandfather Johannes Campanius, chaplain of the Swedish colony from 1643 to 1648; on verbal accounts by his father; and on the relations of the engineer Peter Mårtensson Lindeström (or Linström) and other settlers. His narration of the capture of the territory by the Dutch in 1655 and subsequent life of the Swedish colonizers under the Quaker rule of William Penn was also taken from contemporary sources, mainly settlers' correspondence. The third and fourth parts are devoted to the culture and language of the local Native American tribes; and the Addenda contain a vocabulary of the Delaware language (comparing it to Hebrew), compiled by the author's grandfather, who translated the Catechism into the Lenape tongue. The chapters in this book that deal with the language and customs of the Indians in Pennsylvania and Virginia were probably informed and inspired by this work. The work contains the earliest continuous meteorological observations in North America, recorded by Johannes Campanius in 1644 and 1645, and an account of the first Finnish colony in North America, at Upland (later Chester, PA), which included the village "Finland." Peter S. du Ponceau has here translated the work, 132 years after its publication, into English for the first time. It's five lithographs include, a map of the settlement, after Lindeström, titled "New Sweden called today Pensylvania," showing the region claimed by the colony along the Delaware River; another smaller map of the settlement, showing the Delaware River including Philadelphia, after Visscher; a map of Trinity Fort; a Plan of the Town & Fort of Christina; and an Indian Fort. These lithographs give the reader a visual guide as they explore New Sweden through the text written by Campanius. Dr. Frank T. Siebert (1912-1997) was one of the greatest twentieth-century book-collectors, especially in the field of Americana and more particularly Native American material. The signature of Edwin Walter allows the identification of the volume from the Siebert Library. The Siebert sale description records that the work was acquired from (Wright) Howes, best known for his indispensable bibliography U.S.-iana, but also had a bookshop in Chicago. Could this have been Howes's exemplar for the bibliography? Howes C 84; Sabin 10203. Catalogued by K.A. Salamack. …
