Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good, Few creases and Tears. First Edition. Text on front cover reads: Before retiring from the post of South African Ambassador in Paris Mr S.F. du Toit served as head of South Africa's diplomatic missions to Sweden, Argentine, Chile, Portugal, Spain and Italy. Having travelled widely before he entered the foreign service, he then availed himself of the opportunity to explore the countries of his assignment by car, finding it the best way to meet the people. Often part of the reason was the challenge of meeting difficult road conditions. These reminiscences are full of lively anecdote, shrewd observation of people and a zest for adventure. His first and second posts, in Sweden and the Argentine, are a good example of the contrasts which an ambassador may have to face. The two countries were as far apart in size, climate and the temperament of their people as they are geographically. In Sweden the guests to an embassy dinner assembled outside the front door and announced themselves on the stroke of the clock. In the Argentine where a little "tolerancia" was often requested, and otherwise taken for granted, the guest of honour could be anything up to a couple of hours late. The author was also deputy to the leader of the South African delegation to the United Nations in 1953 and gives a fascinating account of the Russians, the "Enemies yet Friends" who by the chance of the alphabet were seated next to the then Union of South Africa, and of the South African delegation's relations with the other African delegates. There are some interesting travel and historical notes ranging from South Africa to distant countries and throughout this book there are comments without hypocrisy on a wide variety of subjects, including thoughts on Mr du Toit's own rather esoteric profession of diplomacy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 222 pages, b/w photographs ------------------ Orders over $100.00 are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.
