Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Bob Correa. John Celardo (illustratore). 1st Edition. From the dawn of the Silver Age of comics, issue No. 5 in the original run of Turok under the Dell publishing banner, appearing as a regular quarterly comic, with a publishing date of September-November 1956. This issue features the typical painted cover that stood Turok apart, and contains the graphic stories "The River of Fire" and "The Secret Place". Consisting of 32 newsprint pages plus covers, saddle-stitched, the publisher took the unusual step of continuing the second story onto the inside back cover (with no color). Condition: The front and back covers contain a number of minimal creases from handling, but edgewear is absent from both except at tips. Several short, thin horizontal creases extend from the spine on the front cover, due to binding stress. A newsdealer's date stamp in light blue ink appears in the "T" in "Turok". While light toning appears in the page margins, it is most noticeable on the edges of the inside front and back covers. Page tips are lightly rounded and white areas in the Juicy Fruit gum ad on the back cover have accumulated some light soiling. (See photos of covers.) Pages have browned at the edges but remain supple and firm. When the page edges are fanned, two small water stains appear on the lower right side. Cover and staples are tight and there's no spine roll. Conservatively graded VG+ (4.5), based on the grading standards in the 51st Edition of Overstreet (2021-2022), pp 212-215. Comes in an archival Mylar sleeve with archival backing board. Softcover.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Bob Correa (illustratore). 1st Edition. From the early years of the Silver Age of comics, issue No. 6 in the original run of Turok under the Dell publishing banner, appearing as a regular quarterly comic, with a publishing date of December 1956 - February 1957. This issue features the typical painted cover that stood Turok apart from many other comics, and contains the graphic Turok stories "The Giant Ape" and "The Stick Thrower", along with "Lotor" ( a short 4-page graphic feature about a raccoon surviving life with dinosaurs) and a 1-page text story called "Aknet Becomes A Man". Consists of 32 newsprint pages plus covers, saddle-stitched. Condition: The front and back covers contain a number of minor creases from handling and several long vertical creases running almost paralell to the spine, but edgewear is absent from both covers. Cover colors remain bright. Page tips are softened but not rounded. Bottom edge of the spine (1/8 inch) is bumped and wrinkled. The large white areas in the Trix cereal ad on the back cover have accumulated some soiling, most heavily along the spine and edges. In addition, a small (1/16-inch deep) area 1 inch long is missing from the left edge of the BC. (See photos of covers.) Pages have browned at the edges, but remain supple and firm. Page margins show light toning. Cover and staples are tight. There's a slight spine roll at the top of the spine. From the dawn of the Silver Age of comics, this is just the second issue in the original run of Turok under the Dell publishing banner that appeaed as a regular quarterly comic, with a publishing date of June-August 1956, identified as "No. 4", referencing the two "one-shots" that had preceded quarterly publication: Dell #596 [12/54] and #656 [10/55]. This issue features the typical painted cover that stood Turok apart from many other comics. It contains the graphic stories "The Bridge to Freedom" and "The Smilodon". Consisting of 32 newsprint pages plus covers, saddle-stitched, the publisher took the unusual step of continuing the second story onto the inside back cover (with no color) and then onto the outide back cover (with color). Many of the early students also brought their slaves to the college with them. Upon Emancipation some of the African Americans of the community--mostly women--stayed on as servants, forming what is now called the Hollins Community. Although the servants played an integral part in the college's success, students were strongly discouraged from acknowledging them as people. Rules forbidding any 'familiarity' with the servants perpetuated a prejudicial attitude toward the African American community that would persist well into the 1940s. Determined to give voice to the African American community that served as the silent workforce for Hollins College, Ethel Morgan Smith [herself a graduate of Hollis College] succeeded in finding individuals to step forward and tell their stories."--jacket ; VG/VG.
