EXCERPT: Foreword to the Second Edition - Revising a successful textbook is probably still more of an art than a science. One doesn't want to tamper too much with success, but at the same time there are obviously few books, especially textbooks, which can't stand some improvement. Our approach, therefore, in revising Freshman Calculus has been a pragmatic one. We have retained that which seemed to work the first time, we fixed that which needed to be fixed or added to, and we made every effort to eliminate old errors and introduce no new ones. The result of this process is a moderate revision. The changes in this edition are, to a large extent, the result of suggestions from users of the first edition. The most important changes are the addition of a section on limits and continuity in Chapter 2, the addition of a section on differentials in the last section of Chapter 3, a new treatment of the definite integral in Chapter 5, and the expansion of the exercise sets throughout the book. We have also reorganized and rewritten the softbound student book, now called Studying Calculus, that accompanies the text in an effort to make it more useful . . . Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
