Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition; Eighth Printing. xii & 871 pages; Publisher's maroon-red "leatherette" cloth, flexible boards, flat spine -- front cover and spine lettered in gilt. Minor crease to the rear board. Name and address of the original owner (dated March, 1948) neatly written on the front paste-down endpaper. There is also a Surplus-Duplicated stamp from the Library of Congress, without any indications in this volume as to how or why it came under the control of the LC's GIft and Exchange division -- there are no spine labels, card pockets, stamps, or other marks or writing within. Henney and Dudley's "Handbook of Photography" instantly became a classic upon first publication in 1939. This copy states "Eightth Printing" on the verso of the title page. As the owner's signature implies, it probably dates from 1948, but this issue is un-altered in text or illustrations from the 1939 original. As a data-filled survey of the whole extensive field of photography, it collected all the information that professionals and serious amateur photographers might need -- in a single volume (albeit a thick one, with 871 pages). It is happenstance that this survey appeared exactly one hundred years after the details of Daguerre's photographic process were spread around the world. Now that nearly another century has passed, it is interesting to note how much of the details of photography published here are still useful. While new equipment has become so "user-friendly" that photographers no long need to know these facts, some while still want to have them at hand. In addition to all the expected areas and types of photographic work are thoroughly covered in these pages, it is fascinating to contemplate a few chapters of the more unusual material -- such as MIT's Dr. Harold Egerton's chapter on "High-Speed Photography" (published the same year as Egerton's first book appeared).
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Later printing. 871pp, octavo hardcover bound in semi-flexible burgundy cloth. minor wear to book edges, light crease to rear cover, tight binding, bookplate, light pencil notes to ffep, interior text clean.
