La guerre qui a opposé, de 1282 à 1355, le comté de Savoie au Dauphiné et à ses autres voisins, comme les sires de Thoire-Villars, aux confins de la Bresse et du Bugey, fut le dernier, mais le plus long et le plus violent acte d une guerre commencée un siècle plus tôt. Dans ses causes et son déroulement, cette guerre s est inscrite comme l élément majeur de la construction politique et territoriale du comté de Savoie, aux principaux dépens du Dauphiné. En cela, la guerre delphino-savoyarde est bien l affrontement de deux puissances dont les finalités politiques s opposent. Dans ses détails et son quotidien, cette guerre semble composée d une suite sans fin d agressions et de coups de mains qui en eux-même n ont rien de décisifs, mais dont l ensemble finit par former le conflit. La rivalité des princes recouvre le plus souvent des affrontements locaux et particuliers qui paraissent plus féodaux que « nationaux ». Cependant, l analyse des événements, de leur chronologie, de leur situation géographique tend à montrer que cette guerre s est finalement déroulée, surtout pour le parti savoyard, selon un processus raisonné et logique. Il émerge de l étude des opérations militaires, l existence d une véritable stratégie cohérente et subtile, organisée sur le long terme. Cette stratégie a consisté en un grignotage territorial qui s est appuyé et consolidé sur des châteaux et des fortifications. Ce grignotage s est principalement effectué à partir du Bugey en direction du Revermont parce que les comtes de Savoie étaient installés dans cette région depuis longtemps et qu ils pouvaient y apporter des appuis militaires depuis les territoires historiques du comté.
