Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. First and Only Edition. This was the last major work on dyeing fabrics with natural dyes before W.H.Perkin's serendipitous discovery in 1856 of the first synthetic coal-tar dye, mauveine. Jean Baptiste Andre Dumas was a famous chemist and public figure who was several times a member of the French Gov…ernment. In the period 1828-1846 he wrote a monumental textbook on chemical technology: "Traite de Chimie, Appliquee aux Arts". This present book, about the dyeing of textiles, is a separate reprint of Chapter XII of this larger work, which covers many other sectors in addition. Half Title page, Title page, then 416 pp. Five Chapters: 1. Matieres Colorant, describing the various natural dyes; 2. Teinture; the dyeing of fabrics, including silk, cotton, linen, hemp and animal hairs. 3. Preparation of Wool - for dyeing. 4. The Dyeing of Wool. 5. The Printing of Fabrics. The dyes, mordants and other chemicals used are described throughout along with processing instructions. On p. 416 there is a breakdown of the costs incurred in dyeing 200 pieces of calico, their selling price and the resulting profit for the dyer. Followed by 4pp Table des Matieres (Contents). A distinction is made in various places between "Bon Teint" using fast dyes and attractive finishes for the classic, top-end of the market and "Petit Teint" using cheaper non-fast dyes and less expensive finishing processes for the more price-conscious and fashion-driven bottom-end. Original calf with marbled endpapers. Gilt author and title on spine. Some pages uncut. Mild foxing throughout. Unusually, most pages are browned to some degree but only in the areas of text and not in the margins. A GOOD copy. One of Edelstein's "Thirteen Key Books in the History of Dyeing and Bleaching Published before1856". He comments:"Contains detailed references tom the literature which is unuual for a book on dyeing. It has a clear scientific outlook and presents both theory and practical formulas". Book 0332 in Ron: Bibliothecha Tinctoria. The book weighs 0.5kg (1.1 lbs). Postage quotation by service and destination given on request. Size: 8.5 x 5.5.
