VOLUME I ONLY of a two volume set. Paged as [2], 9-320, 1-8 pages. Hardcover: H 20.5cm x L 12.75cm. Contemporary dark cloth stained and rubbed; slight wear at bumped board corners; tearing to surface cloth at lower front joint; small cloth loss/tears at spine ends; spine retains original paper title label albeit well toned with some surface abrasions. Deckle fore-edge and bottom edge. Two-line ink ownership inscription "A.N. DeMenil | 1888" on front free endpaper (quite likely St. Louis, Missouri historian, literary critic, and author Dr. Alexander Nicolas DeMenil, 1849-1928). Light foxing; interior pages mostly remain clean. Binding is firm. Although with no accompanying bookplate or inscription, this book was acquired from an Indianola, Mississippi estate collection descended from St. Louis physician, naval historian, and book collector Dr. Edward Lee Dorsett, 1883-1967, which certainly lends credence to a St. Louis and A.N. DeMenil provenance.…
