This issue addressed the fundamental elements of domestic and foreign policy, and the relationship of the United States to the war and prospective peace. Since 1889, The American Academy of Political and Social Science has served as a forum for the free exchange of ideas among the well informed and intellectually curious. In this era of specialization, few scholarly periodicals cover the scope of societies and politics like The ANNALS. Each volume is guest edited by outstanding scholars and experts in the topics studied and presents more than 200 pages of timely, in-depth research on a significant topic of concern. The American Academy of Political and Social Science was founded in 1889 to promote progress in the social sciences. Sparked by Professor Edmund J. James and drawing from members of the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, Swarthmore College, and Bryn Mawr College, the Academy sought to establish communication between scientific thought and practical effort. The goal of its founders was to foster, across disciplines, important questions in the realm of social sciences, and to promote the work of those whose research aimed to address important social problems. Today the AAPSS is headquartered at the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and aims to offer interdisciplinary perspectives on important social issues. The primary modes of the Academy's communication were to be the bimonthly journal, The Annals, annual meetings, symposia, and special publications. Difficult topics were not avoided. The 1901 annual meeting was on race relations in America, and included a paper by Booker T. Washington. The Academy began as a membership organization. Membership was open and inclusive with an emphasis on educated professionals; even from the its establishment, women were permitted to obtain membership. The Academy's members have included not only academicians, but also distinguished public servants such as Herbert Hoover and Frances Perkins. Dwight Lowell Dumond was professor emeritus of American history at the University of Michigan. Professor Dumond retired in 1965 after 35 years on the faculty. He remained active afterwards as a professor at Howard University. and in 1968 9 as professor of American institutions at Colgate University. Widely known among fellow 'historians, he was generally critical of teaching methods. At a conference of the Mississippi Valley Historical Association in Bloomington. Ind., in 1946, he urged that "dull teaching" be eliminated and that dynamic. wide awake instructors be found for history classes. The University of Michigan honored him in 1963 with its Distinguished Achievement Award. In 1961 he was a winner of the Anisfield Wolf Saturday Review Award. He earned his bachelor's degree at Baldwin Wallace University in 1920 and his master's at Washington University in 1925. He received his Ph.D. in 1929. at the University of Michigan. During the first World War, he was a member of the American Expeditionary Force. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.…
