Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Founded in 1677, Somerset grew from Wampanoag guidance into a resilient port town shaped by history, hardship, and community spirit.Having settled on Shawomet ground in 1677, colonists were instructed how to fish, farm, and hunt by the Wampanoags, a Native American tribe. Settlers found the riverside location ideal for growth and prosperity. However, they were not prepared for harsh winter storms or severe windstorms. Many lost their lives. Survivors worked even harder to achieve their original goal. The Town of Somerset was incorporated in 1790. Known as a major shipping port along the eastern seaboard during the 1800s, Somerset is a community filled with a plethora of local history dating back more than four centuries. As the number of family-owned businesses grew, the population of the town grew as well. By the middle of the twentieth century, Somerset became more suburban in nature. Many businesses still thrive at their original locations, while others have expanded operations, moving to more modern facilities along the major roadways in town. At times, severe weather still affects the population, yet the resiliency of the townspeople defines their character of lending a hand to others while striving to look ahead to the future. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The Town of Dighton, Massachusetts, blends Native American heritage, early European settlement, and industrial growth along the Taunton River.Native Americans, Wampanoags, inhabited vast acreage abutting the Taunton River and its tributaries in Southeastern Massachusetts prior to the arrival of European settlers in the early 1600s. In 1672, the portion known as "Taunton South Purchase" was deeded to an organized lot of settlers. Survival skills of hunting and fishing were shown to male settlers, while females and children learned about farming and preparing shellfish found along river banks. This parcel became the Town of Dighton in 1712. Property on the eastern shore of the Taunton River was appropriated to the Town of Berkley in 1799. Shipping and ship building became a major source of revenue in Dighton for decades. As the population increased, more homes were built. Townspeople planted gardens on cleared land. Crops flourished in the fertile soil. Larger farms, which raised animals or vegetables, sprouted up over much of the southern part of town by the mid-1800s. Industry in the northern section took advantage of the rivers, using water power to operate machinery. Laden with history, the Town of Dighton continues to grow, incorporating its past with future endeavors. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Rehoboth, established in 1643 by Samuel Newman, remains a rural town with deep historical roots and modern growth.Seeking the opportunity to begin anew, Samuel Newman, an Episcopalian, left England after being accused of rebelliousness. He moved to Massachusetts, became disgruntled yet again and relocated to a new area with a following of about forty families. "And he called the name of it Rehoboth; and He said, 'For the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.' Genesis. XXVI. 22." Rehoboth was established in 1643. Old Rehoboth has since divided into the towns of Seekonk and Rehoboth, Massachusetts, the city of East Providence, Rhode Island, and portions of other municipalities. One of the largest towns area-wise in Massachusetts, Rehoboth has maintained rural characteristics for over 379 years. Modernization is noted along roadways with businesses, cell towers, internet and cable services, homes, and sport fields on former farmland. Residents have persevered through major weather and health crises, coming together to help fellow neighbors. May future growth of Rehoboth reflect its past history. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
